Washing your hands is boring, and many standard-issue soaps smell like chemicals or just smell bad. But, like most things in life, there is a better way.

In 2016, the FDA ruled that “anti-bacterial” soaps are needless and can actually cause harm if they include the ingredient Triclosan. Up until then, I had been using nasty anti-bacterial soap for everything, including washing my hands.
Now, I welcome you to the hand-soap renaissance we can all enjoy together without fear of bacteria.
Hand soaps have gotten crazy, guys and girls, in a good way. So many unusual scents and types available to keep hand-washing interesting for your and your guests. As odd as it sounds, I’ve recently gotten into spicing up this most mundane activity with exotic liquid hand-soaps. These may cost more than your standard hand-soap, but buying refill jugs helps with the cost significantly. You could even have these only in some rooms and not others, or save them for company. If you can, however, go crazy with it.
Here are my picks (all highly rated by Amazon customers):
1. Cucina Hand-Soaps: Great Design, Glass Bottle, Great Colors, Unusual and Appealing Scents
I love the scents of the Cucina soaps that I have been priviliged to try, and they have my favorite bottle design. Very striking, especially in a glass bottle. It looks too nice to be soap.
I’ve included all the varieties with their refills. The Sea Salt and Amalfi Lemon sadly has no refill available on Amazon, but I didn’t want to leave it out.
Note: Cucina also makes dish-soaps and hand-lotions, which I haven’t tried, but also get excellent reviews.
2. Capri Essentials Natural Hand Soap: Great Look, Simple and Excellent Scents From Essential Oils, Natural Ingredients
Essential oils are so hot right now, and are very effectively used in soaps and other personal care products. I’ve tried all three scents available on Amazon and they are all great. The Sweet Basil is especially unusual and interesting.
Unfortunately there are no refills, but these are comparable to the refill price (per ounce) of the Cucina ones above.
3. A La Maison Hand Soap: French Soap in Some Very Unusual Scents, Cruelty Free and Made with Olive and Argan Oils
The bottles aren’t as attractive as the other options, but the scents are really cool, including White Tea, Fig and Basil and Yuzu Lime.
This is an old-style soap from an old recipe, and is less thick than a modern hand-soap. Something different and cool to try!
4. Greenwich Bay Trading Co. Hand Soap: Bright Bottles and a Lot Of Interesting Floral and Fruit Combinations
This brand has great looking bottles that are brightly colored and very cheerful without being loud. The scents like Ginger Lily, Black Currant and Olive Butter, and Coconut Lime and Ginger are really unique and enticing. They also have a specific “for the kitchen” line of hand soaps, one of which features Cocoa Butter, Shea Butter, Thyme Leaf Oil and Orange, Grapefruit and Lemon extract. I haven’t tried it yet, but I love citrus scents, so that sounds really good to me.
