Four years ago, I decided to buy a bunch of matching furniture all at once. Although I was initially hesitant to go full IKEA, I eventually did and have not regretted it.

IKEA furniture is famous for being pretty easy to put together, but if you get one of the more screw-or-bolt-heavy pieces (like a bed, for instance), you will get tired of doing it all manually long before you’re actually finished assembling it.
If you buy multiple pieces of big furniture at once, having power-tool assistance is absolutely essential unless you want to spend a full week doing it.
The Best Cheap Corded Drill on Amazon
SKIL 6445-04 7.0 Amp 1/2 In. Hammer Drill
5pc #2 X 6″ Cord Less Drill Phillips Screwdriver Bit Magnetic Tip Extra Long Set
StarTech.com 10 ft Power Extension Cord – NEMA 5-15R to NEMA 5-15P – 14 AWG Power Cable – 125 Volts at 15 Amps – SJT – 10ft
This drill is better than the $20 one I got for the job (which hasn’t broken, by the way). I would link to a cheaper one, but everything cheaper on Amazon has less than 4 stars.
A cheaper one (rated above 3 stars) would probably be fine for this use, but I didn’t want to risk recommending garbage. This drill will also be extremely useful for all your other drill needs and based on the reviews, it won’t just break on you during more stressful jobs.
This drill reverses (perfect for unscrewing if you mess up on your furniture assembly and put something in crooked), and has variable speed so you can go slow and not strip your hardware. It also has a hammer setting (hammering action while drilling), which you can (and definitely should) turn off for furniture assembly. The cheapest highly-rated corded drill on Amazon just happens to have a hammer setting.
When buying a cheap power tool, a corded one will be much more powerful (and lighter) than a battery-powered one of comparable price. Simple as that. If you’re not sure you have a spare extension cord rated for the amp draw of the drill (7 amps), I’ve linked to a nice cheap one that is appropriate for this drill above.
Philips-head Screwdriver Bits
This is the type of bit that works for putting together IKEA furniture.
It looks like most people don’t buy these on Amazon, as there’s no clear, inexpensive winner when looking at the products available and their reviews and ratings. These bits look good, as they’re longer than most I’ve seen, which is a great feature for putting together furniture. I found out the hard way that it can be difficult to reach every screw and bolt when using a short bit.
