A FRIEND RECENTLY LET ME KNOW ABOUT A NEW SERVICE that goes by the name MoviePass.
Actually, it’s not a new service at all, but the pricing is, and that’s really what makes this of interest to a majority of people. If you go to the movies even once a month don’t mind seeing movies on 2D screens of non-IMAX variety, this is for you. I don’t even see movies on IMAX screens and 3D doesn’t work for me, so MoviePass is the perfect
Before subscribing, I’d check for supporting theaters near you using the tool at the bottom of their homepage (linked above). MoviePass is accepted almost everywhere in my area and many others, but it doesn’t hurt to check ahead of time just to make sure you’re getting what you want out of the service.
In order to use MoviePass, you, obviously, have to sign up first. According to a
“MoviePass cards typically take 5-7 business days to arrive. We ask that you allow extra time when ordering on or around post office holidays.”
Once you receive your card, you’ll need to download the MoviePass app (available for iPhone and Android) to take advantage of the service, and then go through the process of buying a ticket. The process is this:
- Use the app to find the theater, movie, and showtime you want
- Go to a theater that supports MoviePass, physically. You can find “MoviePass Approved Theaters” in the app or on their website, filtered by your location. You need to be within 100 yards of the theater you intend to purchase a ticket from, so buying tickets in advance online will not work with MoviePass.
- Once you’re at the theater, select the film and showtime you want and use the app to “check in”.
- Now that you’ve checked in to your theater,
film and showtime via the app, MoviePass has added the amount of money you need to buy your ticket to your MoviePass card. You now have 30 minutes to buy your ticket with the card or you will have to restart the process. - Buy your ticket with your MoviePass card!
So, it’s a little more complicated and a little more limited than buying movie tickets usually is. Naturally, there are more limitations associated with the service, but nothing that would prevent me from using it, personally. For instance, you can only use your MoviePass card to buy one ticket, and just for yourself: MoviePass says that they hope to add plans for families and couples in the future, though.
I’m totally into the idea of this service. With Moviepass, going to the movies becomes less of a day-to-day decision. Much like Blockbuster disappearing and being replaced by Netflix, the individual purchases are replaced by an inexpensive monthly subscription. This could be a game-changer for me and for many others. I think that’s great, and I hope to use this service myself, soon.
