Watch the Mini Manbo robot (probably) find melted radioactive uranium fuel rods

IN 2011, THE FUKUSHIMA DAIICHI NUCLEAR POWER PLANT EXPERIENCED A MELTDOWN due to damage caused by a tsunami following the Tōhoku earthquake. Ever since then, the plant has been leaking extremely dangerous radiation into the Pacific Ocean and surrounding area.

The problem with radiation, is, obviously, that it’s dangerous. So dangerous that you can’t get near it to contain it, and even robots sent into the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant have had to be abandoned after being broken by the extreme radiation they encountered upon entering the hazardous area.

The newest attempt to find the melted radioactive uranium fuel rods via robot has (probably) succeeded thanks to a new little swimming robot, dubbed the Mini Manbo

This robot was developed by Toshiba and the International Research Institute for Nuclear Decommissioning (IRID), is made with radiation-resistant materials and uses sensors to avoid the most dangerous areas that could render is inert.

It took six years, but this robot has found melted material below the hole in the reactor chamber that contained the radioactive fuel rods, material that researchers believe probably contains the melted radioactive fuel rods.

Cleanup of this disaster is going to take “30 to 40 years”, but finding exactly where the radioactive material is located is a crucial first step to getting the situation rectified.
