Amazon’s Subscribe & Save is a great feature, but it’s a little complicated, and it’s a little more of a commitment than most of us want when we’re casually buying from Amazon. In fact, you have to wait for your subscription to ship a lot of the time! it’s almost the complete opposite of what Amazon stands for as they push towards quicker and quicker shipping. So Amazon.com isn’t set up to make it easy to use Subscribe and Save. Here’s how you hack it. Find at least one item...

I use them every day. There’s always at least a few in my fridge holding my leftovers....

PHOTO BY LUCAS WADE PALMER, FLICKR Salt flats (or salt plains) are beautiful in their desolation, and are a great photo op for anyone. This one, by Lucas Wade Palmer, however, stood out to me. The almost-monochrome coloring, soft contrast, and uniformity of the surface make this photo a cut above your average salty photo. It almost looks like an old video-game, in a good way. The subject in the photo is perfectly placed in the frame, and the sky-to-ground ratio really draws the eye in. The...

Photo by chris goldberg, flickr Taking advantage of a beautiful location and a photographer’s eye, Chris Goldberg brings us this beautiful photo taken in, as the title says, Andros, Greece. I really like the shadowed walls framing the super-sunny world as if we are looking through a door open to paradise. Great contrast, and the pink walls and flowers with the blue water and sky is a wonderful color combination I love looking at bright photos from warm locations, like this one, when...

I’ve been price-matching in-store for years, and on the rare occasion I need to buy a non-grocery item in a store (instead of Amazon, where I do most of my shopping), I will price-match, and most of the time save a significant amount of money, even when price-matching the store’s own website! A friend told me last night that that he takes advantage of price-matching almost every time he buys items in-store (which is a lot more frequently than I do), and that he regularly saves 20%...

Self-employment is on the rise. Is it time for you to risk it? I’ve been self-employed since 2012, and sure, it’s had its ups and downs. In the end, though, I love it and I would not go back to being an employee unless I was truly in dire straits with no money, no prospects, and no credit left. Before I go further, I want to make it absolutely clear that I do not think working a job or having a career is, in any way, inferior to being self-employed. It’s a deeply personal...

Sports vs activities for younger kids I’ve never been great at sports, but that didn’t stop me from getting a lot out of them as a player and later as a referee. Sports are fun for all ages, but not as much fun for toddlers and preschoolers. Smaller kids don’t have as much desire for structure or competition when playing. Watching preschoolers try to ‘play soccer’ is incredibly cute, but they’d probably have more fun with a friend at the park. Unstructured playing also gives them more...

I was at a concert in a bad seat in 2010, right in front of giant speakers. By the end, I was hearing a very disturbing crackling in my ears. This is what happens when your ears are being damaged, and afterwards, they will never be the same. Thankfully, that experience freaked me out enough that I sought hearing protection for over-loud situations. Maybe you’ve done this thought experiment with your friends: Would you rather be blind or deaf? The real answer, of course, is neither. ...

Let me start by saying this: My intention here is not to make you fear your dirty towels. It’s more interesting science than anything else, but it may also lead to you changing your towel-washing habits for the better, as it did for me. That being said: We’re clean when we get out of the shower and dry ourselves, so our bath towels must stay clean for a while between washes, right? Not so, according to science Apparently, our towels should be washed at least once every three...

Four years ago, I decided to buy a bunch of matching furniture all at once. Although I was initially hesitant to go full IKEA, I eventually did and have not regretted it. IKEA furniture is famous for being pretty easy to put together, but if you get one of the more screw-or-bolt-heavy pieces (like a bed, for instance), you will get tired of doing it all manually long before you’re actually finished assembling it. If you buy multiple pieces of big furniture at once, having power-tool...
